1×05 – The Enemy Within
Premise: In this episode, a transporter malfunction splits Jim into two halves – a good Jim and an evil Jim. The good Jim has intelligence and compassion, but is weak and can’t make decisions. The evil Jim is violent and cocky and sex-crazed. We learn that the “bad” parts of Jim are actually what make him a good captain.
The “creature” featured in this episode is just way too hilarious. It’s a dog dressed up in a costume!! Poor thing. Man, it’s cute.
25:10 – Vulcan nerve pinch #2!
27:00 – Spock is telling Kirk that he soon won’t be able to function as Captain. He says, “If I seem insensitive to what you’re going through, Captain, understand – it’s the way I am.”
38:00 – Spock opens a window to the inner turmoil he experiences, as a half-Vulcan half-human: “Being split in two halves is no theory with me, doctor. I have a human half, you see, as well as an alien half. Submerged. Constantly at war with each other. Personal experience, doctor – I survive it because my intelligence wins out over both. Makes them live together.” (Speaking to Jim) “Your intelligence will enable you to survive as well.”
46:00 – Good Jim and evil Jim are on the transporter, ready to try the experiment that should blend them back together. Good Jim looks at Spock and says, “If this doesn’t work….” Spock, swallows and nods, clearly worried about his friend. He simply says, “Understood, Captain.” Kirk & Spock know each other so well that no words are necessary.
