1×01 – The Man Trap
Premise: The team encounters an alien life form that can physically transform to look like any human being. This is especially problematic for McCoy, because the alien is pretending to be his ex-girlfriend, eliciting his sympathies.
0:13 – We get our very first glimpse of Spock!! He’s sitting in the captain’s chair. He’s temporarily in command, since Kirk is on a planet.
10:27 – An amusing scene in which Uhura flirts with Spock! This clearly plants a seed for the Uhura/Spock relationship in the 2009 Star Trek movie.
Spock: “Miss Uhura, your last sub-space log contained an error in the frequencies column.” [Such a stickler!]
Uhura: “Mr Spock, sometimes I think if I hear that word ‘frequency’ once more I’ll cry.”
Uhura: [Touches Spock’s arm] “I was just trying to start a conversation.”
Spock: “Well, since it is illogical for a communications officer to resent the word ‘frequency,’ I have no answer.”
Uhura: “No, you have an answer. I’m an illogical woman who’s beginning to feel too much a part of that communications console. Why don’t you tell me I’m an attractive young lady? Or ask me if I’ve ever been in love? Tell me how your planet Vulcan looks on a lazy evening when the moon is full.”
Spock: “Vulcan has no moon, Miss Uhura.”
Uhura: “I’m not surprised, Mr. Spock.”
Next the tone turns more serious. An officer communicates to the bridge that one man in the landing party is dead. Spock acknowledges the statement and doesn’t seem upset.
Uhura: “I don’t believe it.”
Uhura: “You explain! That means that somebody is dead and you just sit there. It could be Captain Kirk, he’s the closest thing you have to a friend.”
Spock: “Liutenant, my demonstration of concern will not change what has happened.”
This shows that Spock is a stalwart, in control of his emotions. It also implies that Kirk & Spock are friends. Cute!
36:20 – It’s fun seeing Kirk & Spock duck behind conveniently placed styrofoam rocks with their phasers drawn. It reminds me of little kids playing cowboys and Indians. Heck, it makes me want to go out in the woods with a toy phaser and pretend to be Spock hunting down an evil alien!
46:20 – Spock enters the room and sees the alien in the process of killing Kirk! He yells at McCoy to shoot it, but he won’t, becuase it looks like his ex Nancy. Spock tried to wrestle the gun away, but McCoy holds on tight. So Spock deals the funniest blows to the alien I’ve ever seen!! He clamps his hands together and hits her back and forth across the face with his fists! Looks really weird.
Then the alien/Nancy sends Spock flying back against the book ledge, where he crumples to the ground.
And then the alien morphs into its true form, which is quite the hilarious rubber costume!
All in all, this was a very good first episode. It didn’t try too hard to explain the characters. It just dove right in, letting viewers see one of the many adventures of the Starship Enterprise.
